[At first it's just an eyebrow with some muttering about stupid contraptions.] How does this thing work?

[He pulls it closer, but there's an eye now. You wanted to see an eye, right?] And just how are you supposed to tell if it is working?

[He sighs before holding it a little farther away.] Well, I do not know if it is working. This thing is unusual at best. I suppose I might as well make an introduction. Hello. [He goes to tip the hat that is not there before making an annoyed expression and moving on.] My name is John Henry, but you may call me Doc. If anyone is better with these things, I believe I may be in need of some instruction.

Unless I am talking to myself. [This is said softer and meant to be mostly to himself.] Perhaps I ought to stop this before I make even more of a fool of myself.

You could've had me fooled with that one.

[ You know, Purgatory being the actual afterlife and all. After all the crazy things surrounding Daniel's own arrival here and some of the things others have told him, Daniel would almost be willing to believe it. ]

How have you been faring here so far, aside from trying to figure out how this form of communication works?

Given previous conversations, I would not be surprised.

I am managing. I'm used to living off the land, so I wager I could manage just about anywhere.

From what I've seen so far, food seems to restock itself in stores, so surviving shouldn't be too much of a problem.

[ Without even having to live off the land!

But even though that's at least a positive sentiment, there's much more that Daniel is actually worried about.. and though he doesn't want to fully show his cards here - if not just because he doesn't want to make the other worried - he still can't help but bring it up a little. ]

As long as no more unsettling things happen. Did you also get asked questions back there in the train?

Yes. I did see that. And the restaurants have no workers, but still manage to have just what it is you were lookin' for. Seems a bit unnerving if I am to be completely honest.

[They are aware that this happens in normal grocery stores, but those have workers to do the restocking. These have nothing and no one.]

Well, I do not think we are free of that. I did, yes. Rather unusual questions.

You have no idea what a relief it is to hear someone say this place is unusual and kind of unnerving. [ Not that no one at all has said that or anything - but some people seem entirely too comfortable here already.

Especially all the odd murder talk that had been happening earlier. It makes someone saying this weird place is weird kind of nice. It feels much more in line with Daniel's own experience. ]

Even if nothing about the place itself seems actually dangerous so far, it does kind of feel as if we are waiting for the other shoe to drop sooner or later.

I have seen a great many thing and they would not seem any less unsettling. This just has the markings of something powerful. [Which is the problem, isn't it? Because Doc has no idea what in God's name this is or who is behind it. Witches or something else.]

Always seems that way. Just waiting for something to turn sour.

[ There's a slight pause before his next reply arrives. Mostly because Daniel doesn't want to come across as too strange or paranoid here, but.. on the other hand, sometimes it's nice to be able to discuss these serious things in a serious situations with an actual adult, rather than the many teenagers and twenty-somethings in the city.

So in the end Daniel decides to just go for it and ask. ]

Are you doing anything to prepare in the meantime?

[Anything to prepare in the meantime. Doc's still trying to figure it all out as they are.]

Well, I am not necessarily sure how to prepare for it. I do not have a weapon I can use at this point. But I can figure it out. I've had to fight a lot of unusual creatures at this point.

It really doesn't seem like weapons are readily available here. For better or worse.

[ Sure, it'd be nice to have something to defend with against an actual threat - but on the other hand, with some of the conversations people have here on the network, maybe it's truly better if there just aren't weapons. For anyone.

He doesn't want to know how crazy people might go with it. ]

Unusual creatures, though? What kind?
