[ The screen opens up to a black imitation Chesterfield couch in pride of place at the centre of the screen. On it sits a young man of seemingly around twenty years old, dressed in a half unbuttoned black shirt and silver waistcoat, tight black slacks and shining black boots with golden toe caps; his long legs crossed elegantly before him, he lifts his wrist in a light wave of greeting toward the viewfinder. ]

Good evening, everyone. Lestat here.

[ A flourish of his other hand, a widespread sweep as if he'd just announced something very impressive, and then he leans forward with the manner one might take when speaking to a dear friend, rather than addressing a network of mostly strangers. ]

I've been thinking, mes très chers, as I am often known to do: it's my birthday soon, and though I'd love nothing more than to throw some grand shindig and invite all of you, I have it from a reputable source that it might not be the best idea given the way the last party we were all invited to turned out for a lot of us.

[ In the background, another figure can be seen through the entranceway leading to the kitchen, though this man seems much less prepared to be on show to the entire network as he goes about taking off his gardening gloves and placing the tools he'd been using into the sink. He emerges a moment or two later with two freshly potted plants in his hands, which he deposits somewhere off-screen, before returning and taking his place at Lestat's side. ]

That, and, if I'm being honest... I'm feeling strangely low-key about it this year. All I really want to do is sit in the comfortable velvet seats of a quaint little movie theater and watch something new. I've heard of the media store opening soon, of course, but I'll be another year older weeks before its doors open. Instead of wasting time browsing once I'm inside, I thought instead that I might rely on the knowledge of the masses, so-to-speak, and get a few recommendations before that time comes.

So, I come to you with a question, my beloved City: what is your favourite movie? Tell me the plot, describe to me your favourite scene, tell me how your favourite actor 'eats up' every role they play — truly, anything goes. If you don't have films in the world you are from, perhaps tell me your favourite story, and maybe while I'm inside the media store I can keep my eye out for an adaptation of it for you.

[ His eyes naturally slide to his side, to his patient companion, and a smile curls his mouth. ]

And, if you're interested in something a little more challenging... Louis is here, too, and he can be frightfully picky. If you manage to genuinely pique his interest, then you'll really impress me.

[Loki frowns, looking at Lestat with a bit of confusion when he suddenly interrupts them almost excitedly. He’s not even sure if it’s a true interruption simply because they were all talking together, but it still strikes him as odd.]

I, well, I suppose. I hadn’t thought too much about the details, but you did mention you wanted something more low key. I wouldn’t want to change your plans by accidentally inviting half the city.

[He’s playing it off a bit, but the idea of a double date to watch some movies sounds like a wonderful evening.]

I admit it sounds like a nice idea. If you are interested, I would very much like to try this double date you speak of.

( Louis covers his sudden laugh with one hand. )

Ah— I just vividly pictured Lestat in a hard hat and one of those bright orange vests.

[Flippant humour is, of course, Crowley's favourite coping mechanism.]

Well, love and fear aren't mutually exclusive. Which wins out over the other entirely depends on the people and circumstances involved. Genre conventions and all.

Ah - I'm about four decades ahead of you. And it's the last one. Different sides on the stupidest conflict in all history. And we've had our fair share of submarines throughout the years. That is to say macguffins as Hitchcock put it. I called it busywork.

Oh.

[ That's a sound of surprise, and then Inigo quickly continues, more emotion than real thought-- ]

Oh, no, I wasn't-- I didn't really mean it in the vampiric sense, or even the gay sense. [ At least Daniel can speak about that relatively easily. Maybe it's since he's from the late 2010s by now, or maybe it's the fact that he's pretty aware that he is very much bisexual himself. Either way, it means he hadn't even considered that angle yet himself, only now realising what his words from a moment ago could've sounded like.

He shakes his head apologetically. ]

I meant it more on a personal level. You know, some people are a little more comfortable with any sort of PDA than others. [ Some people are just a little more shy.

.. not that Lestat has ever seemed shy to him, honestly. Maybe he was more making sure Louis was alright, considering the other seems a little less.. extroverted than Lestat himself. ]

But I can definitely understand if it's just nice for you guys to be able to be so openly yourself here, when you've had to hide for a long time. It can't always have been easy.

[ as lovely as Lestat is to look at, even through the pixels of the device screen, it's Louis on whom Reno's attention focuses now. he studies the way that muscle shifts in Louis' jaw, the way Lestat touches his knee and speaks in a softer, more soothing tone.

so that's how it is, Reno thinks. Louis, much more reserved, more hesitant, being coaxed into trying something new by his—lover, Reno can only assume, looking at the way their bodies angle toward each other. ]

I ain't trying to step on anybody's toes. [ the look of naked interest on his face doesn't change, though, and he winks as soon as he's able to catch Louis' gaze. ] Just lettin' you know you have options if you want 'em.

[ this movie night metaphor is stretching a little thin for him, at this point, but hopefully Louis understands the meaning: that Reno's down for pretty much whatever, but not about to force the issue if he's not interested. or, frankly, if all Louis wanted to do was hang out and watch a film for real—Reno had enjoyed their conversation, and thinks their tastes might be similar enough. ]

And, y'know, I think you might be pleasantly surprised by my tastes.

It always has appealed but both my mom and brother like horror movies too, though my mom is also into mysteries and I think she likes horror with something to solve more than just plain bloodbath style.
I think some of it is the thrill of scaring yourself, the adrenaline you get from it but it’s also totally safe, like rollercoasters but without the possibility of actual physical harm.

[ He thinks on it a moment and decides if he can tell Daniel he can tell Louis too ]

I think it also appeals to people who overthink and get anxious and scare themselves because it’s controlled? Like you can feel the fear but you can also switch it off if it gets too much.

Everyone I’ve ever met who is upfront about being “weird” or enjoying the kind of things that “start a panic” have been way nicer than people who tout themselves as normal upstanding citizens, so I’m definitely biased.

Okay so technically Gizmo is a Mogwai, he spawns more Mogwai when he gets wet, but if you feed them after midnight that’s when they become Gremlins and then they’re really evil.
It’s good because it takes a concept that should be scary - alien creatures going on a rampage - but makes them hilarious and funny looking and then also is just so over the top and silly!

I’ve never been part of an exorcism [ hes only half lying. His exorcism was more like getting rid of a disease than a demon. ] but I can imagine people believing stupid stuff that was only part of a movie because they believe stupid lies from the TV all the time.

( Louis lets out a soft laugh, rather charmed and more than a little bit touched by Daniel's concern for his comfort, which is (in this case, at least) entirely unnecessary. He shakes his head side to side. )

Yes, I believe that is true. I don't mind. Now and then I'm actually grateful for it. Left to my own devices, I can be quite solitary.

And... perhaps I like to show how fond of him I am as well.

( The most frustrating thing is that Reno is both intriguing and objectively attractive — and not, thus far, a bad conversationalist. Louis may not have the same roving gaze as Lestat, but he would be a fool not to recognize beauty when he's faced with it.

He softens somewhat at the hand on his knee, reassured and soothed by the reminder of Lestat's presence and devotion. But then that comes with an entirely different sort of nervousness: not that he'll be left behind, but that he might in fact be included. There's subtext here that Louis feels underequipped to navigate, but, for whatever it's worth, he doesn't shut it down.

He does, for a moment, look as if he might be considering attempting to duck into the wide neck of his sweater before he manages to recompose himself.
)

I'm not... necessarily opposed to the idea of expanding my horizons...

[ Aww, Louis. That's so sweet. He's so genuinely happy for the both of you. Sure, it's a little bittersweet when it sure makes Daniel think of his own current marital trouble, but.. at least this place does grant some people a chance to be happy together, huh. ]

Well, I'm glad to know what you found the perfect person to ensure you're never by yourself. [ Because if there's one thing Lestat is, it's.. just.. very, very present. At all times. ]

Though if you're ever feeling a little alone and looking for some other company, you can always come to the diner. I never mind chatting with you, Louis. You're a kind and insightful guy.

[ Judging by Daniel's expression, he really does seem to be glad for the other - and the fluster fades away when he can think a little bit less about his own unfortunate wording, and a little bit more about Lestat and Louis' happiness.

.. until the other arrives at that last part. It's that part that makes Daniel think for a moment, the gears turning in his brain until he speaks up once more. ]

Wait, you've known each other for that long, but only recently started to date?

[ Sure, maybe 200 years is nothing to a vampire. But to Daniel having 200 years of sexual tension with someone who clearly suits you without doing anything about it is wild..

.. Even if he's a man who's had sexual tension with his karate rivals for a few decades now. But 30 years still has nothing on 200, okay!! ]

I doubt that even he could find a way to make that glamorous.

The truth is that most people in our world don't realize we exist. I didn't expect such a warm reception.

Mm... I mean, vampires are kind of a myth where I'm from, or maybe they're just really good at hiding. But as long as they're not trying to kill me, I'm fine with pretty much anyone!

[ She's incredibly open-minded. It's fine. ]

[personal profile] miyagimagic 2023-11-26 02:11 pm (UTC)(link)
[ .. oh, Lestat. Daniel imagined there to be a slightly more.. let's call it vampiric reason as to why they hadn't dated in all that time, not something like this. Something that feels a little more personal, and a little more relatable on a human level.

It does make the fact that they are together and seem so comfortable about it all the better, though. At least it's a story with a relatively happy ending, even if the road leading up to it was bumpy. ]

I think you two should fix that. [ He suggests, easily. ] I know this isn't exactly the ideal place to have dates, but.. you guys definitely deserve a little bit more of that. And sometimes you just have to make the best of what you're given, you know?

[ Do it for the people who don't have their partners here, Lestat. Like Daniel. ]

When you put it that way, it makes complete sense to me. Fear is a perfectly natural emotion — and a wise one to heed now and then, so long as we don't allow it to make slaves of us. And indeed, there are far more reckless thrills that one could seek in the pursuit of an adrenaline rush.

( Louis tries to ignore the prickle of Dorian's skepticism, and answers in earnest: )

It's just as you said. We alone move through the centuries, living in each, not merely looking back upon history but remembering it. I knew New Orleans when it was nothing more than a collection of ramshackle streets between the river and the swamp, and I remember the city as it grew up around us; I recall a performance of La Traviata that brought me to tears, and the feeling it stirred in me matters no less for the fact that the opera house burned to the ground a century ago.

I believe these feelings arise from my immortality, but not from my vampire nature.
