I've an odd question to ask, if you'll indulge me.

Let us say a world exists where all work toward the betterment of their world, where none go without, and no one need be separated from their loved ones before they could bid farewell. Each day is peaceful and productive, and you know your place within it. You need not leave until you are ready, and only when you feel fulfilled.

Would you choose to live in this world or the one you came from? Why?

And to those who know why I ask this question, I pray you answer as well, and do so honestly. I promise 'tis in the spirit of keeping an open mind.

you've got that right. for all the advantages this place has over where i'm from - middle of nowhere, lots of snow, not much to be said about it - it doesn't really have animals, and the buildings back home aren't trying to kill me. there's good points and bad points to everywhere.

soooo...how does it work? the entire everybody works together and nobody goes hungry thing?

look, i only have my experiences to draw from and having enough food to feed everybody's a little bit of a problem back home. hard to step in and feed somebody else when you can barely feed yourself, you know? and if everybody's hungry then hostilities are bound to start as a result.

like, take here. i'd like to think we'd all get along regardless, but if supplies get scarcer, then i'd imagine people wouldn't cooperate quite so much, but maybe that's just me? i can be kind of a cynic.

i doubt it'll get too bad. if nothing else then because all of us apparently just come back after we die. and no, i don't like thinking about that. but point being: if someone kills someone else, they'll come back, it's only a matter of time before they figure out who did it because there's only so many of us around.

and from there it's what, a stupid spiral of killing or water under the bridge over some carrots or a slice of beef? easier to avoid harming someone else. you might need that person the next time something happens here.

for what it's worth i definitely wouldn't want to not hurt people for solely pragmatic purposes. and i'm sure others feel the same, so the reason isn't just a practical one.

i just figured it's easier and made more sense to start with the practical in situations like this? but that's just me.

anyway, you never answered my question. how does the food thing work?

[What the shit.]

i'm definitely gonna take you up on that at some point, but i won't ask you to drop everything and make food for me right now.

okay, so, and i'm sorry if this is something you can only answer by showing me, but: can you make any type of food, is it only food that you've encountered in person, or is it just something pretty limited? take something like.........

ice cream? can you make ice cream, and is it just vanilla ice cream or can you make any flavor you want?

huh

[By which he means that he skimmed the message, read it again, mouthed what the heck.]

so it's not some kind of easy skill that just anybody could learn anywhere and do anytime, by the sounds of it

so basically what you're saying is that if anybody anywhere could do it, it would probably be pretty obvious.

i was starting to get my hopes up that maybe you could show me how to do it. being able to create sweet buns on demand would be nice. i've really missed those.

figures it wouldn't be that easy. well, if we ever find a way out, and you feel like seeing what other places are like before going home, give me a holler.

and i know, we just met, we haven't even seen each other in person, for all you know i'm some crazy 87 year old man with a knife, but i already know a few of my friends would love to meet you. one likes to bake, the second likes to cook, and the third one likes magic. so...unless you're some crazy 87 year old man with a knife, why not throw that out there while it's on my mind?
