Robby "major sensei issues" Keene ([personal profile] strongroots) wrote in [community profile] citynet2023-08-16 03:56 pm

hey. bumped into people around here looking for others to do stuff with, like sports, hanging out, etc. was thinking we could share what hobbies we have and maybe find people to do stuff with. or even just chat about whatever.

i visit the gym for muscle training with a friend, go running with another (who should talk about that). used to skateboard and even played soccer years ago. i know karate if anyone else does it. and a sensei who won't mind teaching if anyone's interested.

so, yeah. you into fashion, music, or just want to talk about something with people, could be fun. find out if anyone else is really into big fluffy birds called chocobos

( ooc: please mingle, share character hobbies or whatever your character wants to chatter about. no need to ask robby anything. ♡

Art! Now there's a fine subject to have a conversation about.
Can I start with asking if you are an artist yourself, or a connoisseur? What's your interest in it?

i'm in charge of the floor of art, at the library back home. it's turned out to be pretty interesting to study... kind of a shame there's not much of it to look into here, though.

wouldn't say i have that much experience, but i draw and paint a little, when i can.

A librarian! I suppose then you keep records of the history of art for your region of the world and beyond.
We have the Akademiya where I am from - a place of learning and knowledge - but art had always been devalued as a form of knowledge, because to the governing body it didn't have the sort of practical aspects that they were looking for. They were short-sighted for it, but it truncated the development of art in my region of the world for some time, and that was the real shame.
So long as you have the interest, however, art is something that you can hone wherever you go. Have you looked into the art supplies in this city?

[oh this is so much, help him-- he's reading all of it, though.]

there's not really a region beyond ours... but i've been studying some of its history and its current forms. it echoes the time and place it comes from, whatever form it's in, so i guess the slower development's going to be a reflection on that practicality in its own way later?

i've been looking into it a little. there's still a lot to get used to here... it's not so bad to have the extra time though.

[ sorry kaveh is just Like This he is So Much. but he reads and - hm. ]

You were in charge of the floor of art in your library, but not given time to pursue it yourself?
That's a travesty.

right? should've been considered part of the job. instead it's netzach go collect the books, netzach it's not sorting if they're on the floor, netzach organize your shelves...

[personal profile] fussiest 2023-08-18 07:05 am (UTC)(link)
They made you a slave, and what for? To not pursue the very knowledge that you were safeguarding? Was that supposed to have made you a better curator of it?
That's unacceptable, really. You had more patience than I for putting up with it. Now that you've the time, I suggest that art and painting can take the forefront.
About how tall are you? I'll fix up an easel for you.

[what in the world

it takes a few minutes to answer, mostly just-- surprised at that response. someone Not telling him to just do his job??]

wait, seriously?

[personal profile] fussiest 2023-08-18 07:13 am (UTC)(link)
[ a beat in turn, because ??? ]

Well... yes!

[ wait, what might be the issue here? quick, kaveh, think thoughts. ]

Unless your culture has a taboo about sharing height information, in which even a guesstimate would do.
Or is this about adjusting an easel? I know there's a common misconception that an easel at any height will do, but it really is a pain on the wrist if it's significantly off, and the easels here aren't particularly adjustable. Custom-made is always best.

nah, nothing like that.

i think i'm about... 175cm?
fussiest: (pic#16494340)

[personal profile] fussiest 2023-08-18 07:19 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, that's easy. I think I have one here that I can sand down a little.
Why were you surprised earlier, then? Do you mind if I ask?
abstractart: (DQvomit)

[personal profile] abstractart 2023-08-18 07:21 am (UTC)(link)
i'm just not really used to people making offers like that, i guess.
fussiest: (pic#16494278)

[personal profile] fussiest 2023-08-18 07:23 am (UTC)(link)
I suppose it was a little out of the blue. Ah, sorry if it was surprising to you.
I get a little carried away, perhaps. I was just imagining you wanting to have some time to yourself to pursue your interests, but being ground down by routine tasks.
Perhaps I'm projecting a little, but I understand that sort of feeling.
abstractart: (Default)

[personal profile] abstractart 2023-08-18 07:38 am (UTC)(link)
it was a little like that, yeah. for a while before that i didn't really have any interests i wanted to pursue at all, but

there's not a lot of stuff to get in the way here, right? has it given you more time to do what you want?
fussiest: (pic#16494321)

[personal profile] fussiest 2023-08-18 07:43 am (UTC)(link)
[ oh no... the deep questions. kaveh stills. the question rings thus: how has realising your ideals gone for you? ]

Um... actually, not really.
While yes, it's given me time to do quite a bit more, and I have less worries about certain things.
But throughout this past month, I've had the realisation that part of the joy of doing what I like to do is doing it in my city, within the context of my city, in defiance of what my city tried to stand for for hundreds of years. It's not meaningless to do it here, but it will mean more, in a different way, if I did it there. Does that make sense?
I realise this is a bit too much of an answer for your question, though. I appreciate you for asking it.
What do you mean by you didn't have any interests you wanted to pursue at all?
abstractart: (Default)

[personal profile] abstractart 2023-08-18 07:52 am (UTC)(link)
it makes a lot of sense. hard to make a difference somewhere that you're not, anymore...

i guess it's the same for me, in a way. i can't say i'm a fan of the way a lot of artists in the city pursue their idea of art. getting a break from work is nice, but it'd probably mean something different to make other kinds of art back there instead of working on it here, even if i do still enjoy it.

[as for the last question-]

that means exactly what it sounds like. i just didn't have much i wanted to do. existed, without really living.
fussiest: (pic#16494320)

[personal profile] fussiest 2023-08-18 07:54 am (UTC)(link)
[ oh... depression (tm). ]

I see.
Sorry to have brought that up, if that's a painful memory for you.
What brought you out of that state of being?
abstractart: (DQvomit)

[personal profile] abstractart 2023-08-18 07:59 am (UTC)(link)
it's fine. it's not like i had to answer, if i didn't feel like it.

i knew someone else who wanted to live their own life, more than anything. hearing them talk about it... it made me think about mine a little differently.
fussiest: (pic#16494332)

[personal profile] fussiest 2023-08-18 08:03 am (UTC)(link)
Wanted to live their own life... huh.
I think it's difficult to hear something like that without wanting to take wing. I'm glad you had a chance to hear that, at a time when you needed it the most.
abstractart: (Default)

[personal profile] abstractart 2023-08-18 08:09 am (UTC)(link)
things worked out, in that sense. i think everyone probably needs that kind of chance at one point or another.
fussiest: (pic#16494258)

[personal profile] fussiest 2023-08-18 08:17 am (UTC)(link)
I think so too.
Mm. I'm really glad.
Oh, but looping back - something you said I'm curious about: what made you dissatisfied about the way the artists in your city were pursuing art?
Perhaps a difference in opinion of style?
abstractart: (6d6KTC1)

[personal profile] abstractart 2023-08-18 08:23 am (UTC)(link)
yeah, you could say that. i can't agree with throwing away lives to create it.
fussiest: (pic#16494221)

abstractart: (6d6KTC1)

[personal profile] abstractart 2023-08-18 08:27 am (UTC)(link)
what?

[normal things in the city unfortunately]
fussiest: (pic#16494279)

[personal profile] fussiest 2023-08-18 08:37 am (UTC)(link)
Well, you said throwing away lives! Please tell me that's a metaphor for a new kind of, I don't know, low quality minimalism movement.
What are they doing, making paintings with blood of their enemies??
